Abstract
We examine how consumer use of antidepressant medications was influenced by warnings provided by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the increased risk of suicidality associated with antidepressant use among children. Using data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, we find evidence consistent with reduced use of antidepressants among the intended population (children), as well as spillover effects of reduced use among an unintended population (adults). Our results indicate that consumers may perceive extra risks beyond those specifically mentioned in warnings.
