Getting the ‘Story’ Out: Teaching Admiralty at the University of Washington

Abstract
In this contribution to the St. Louis University Law Journal’s symposium issue on teaching Admiralty, the author describes his experiences at the University of Washington teaching Admiralty and related maritime law courses in a rich multidisciplinary setting involving law students, marine affairs graduate students and students enrolled in the global trade, transportation and logistics studies program. The author also describes the “mastery” approach used in selected courses at the University of Washington School of Law and adopted for the Admiralty course. Students in mastery courses are assessed and graded on the basis of demonstrated attainment of course learning goals through a series of practical exercises and a comprehensive final problem.
