The Role of Research in Business School Rankings

Abstract
This paper examines the relationship between the research impact of Business Schools, as measured by citations per capita adjusted by area norms, and rankings in leading magazines. Recent attempts by magazines to include measures of research impact appears to lower the correlation between magazine ratings and research influence.
As a byproduct of this analysis I create rankings of approximately 60 business schools (including the top 50). I also rank functional areas, listing the top 15 schools for each field. A chart of faculty citations by area and percentile provides some insight as to distribution of research influence.
Although a listing of the most highly cited individuals is obviously a by-product of this work, that list is not included in the paper.
