Training Field Supervisors to Be Efficient and Effective Critics of Student WritingBernadette FeeleySuffolk University Law School August 5, 2008 Clinical Law Review, Forthcoming Suffolk University Law School Research Paper No. 08-22 Abstract: Most externship clinicians encourage field supervisors to provide students guidance and feedback about their written work. Yet most field supervisors are not trained educators, are not exposed to literature and pedagogy in the legal writing field, and have limited time to help students improve their writing. This article first examines roadblocks to meaningful supervision of student writing projects. This article then provides 10 techniques that externship clinicians can provide to their field supervisors to help them become more effective critics of student writing.
