This report defines these "virtual community services" through the concept of service systems where value is co-created among members of the user community with the aid of the CNS firm. In this report, a representative set of CNS firms are analyzed from a user perspective with the objective of extracting ideas and insights about future service systems and with an emphasis on functional, value, and management perspectives and their interrelationships. These CNS firms are pushing the envelope in several areas, including new styles of applications, new business models, new operational models, and user-centric software development methodologies. They illustrate likely future directions for large and overlapping pieces of both the software and services industries.
