Characteristics of New Firms: A Comparison by GenderAlicia RobbKauffman Foundation; University of California, Santa Cruz Susan ColemanUniversity of Hartford - Barney School of Business March 3, 2009 Abstract: Third in a series of reports using data from the Kauffman Firm Survey. This short report uses data from the Kauffman Firm Survey to explore, by gender, various firm, owner, financing, and performance characteristics of new firms. Women-owned firms represent an increasingly important segment of the small business sector. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 6.5 million privately held women-owned firms in the United States in 2002.
