Guzman-Sanza Sr.Universitat de Lleida - Department of Business Administration and GERN; Universidad del Pacífico, Facultad de Negocios y Marketing - Chile January 24, 2010 Abstract: This paper aims at identifying what is understood as a family business and its dimension and then identify the purpose of it whether it’s economic or has a larger reach. For that aim, we researched several sources which showed diverse approaches to it. Even though as of 1995 researches within this field have had a significant increase, there’s still a lack of consensus about the family business formal definition. In addition, it has gone into family business in depth regarding to the convergence of family systems, business, government and high administration. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the evolution of the family firm concept and the different theories concerning its study.
