Abstract

Cultural participation in all its forms is embedded in everyday life. To develop a deeper understanding of people's cultural behavior, we link cultural consumption patterns to 1) the way in which people apply aesthetic standards to everyday-life domains; 2) the criteria people use when evaluating cultural products; and 3) the subjects on which they seek information. In order to find out, we used survey information on over 2.500 Flemish respondents, including their scores on statements on the significance of clothes, interior design, and food, their obtaining information on specific domains through a range of media, and the aesthetic criteria they apply to film. The results indicate that these additional predictors increase the predictive power of our models substantially and also provide partial interpretations of the effects of more general socioeconomic background variables.
