Wanneer Twee Uitersten Elkaar Tegenkomen (When Two Extremes Meet)Alain-Laurent VerbekeUniversity of Leuven, Faculty of Law, Department of Private Law; Harvard Law School; University of Leuven, Faculty of Psychology; Tilburg Law School Department of Private Law and TISCO; Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) - Católica Global School of Law; University of Brussels (VUB/ULB) ; Greenille (Attorneys, Notaries and Tax Advisors; Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Rotterdam) June 15, 2010 De Morgen, June 2010 Abstract: Op-Ed written two days after the landslide victory of Flemish nationalists NVA and Francophone socialists PS in the federal elections of June 13 2010. I argue that the extreme differences between these two winning parties create opportunities. As negotiation scholars know very well, value is created more by trading on differences than on similarities. Furthermore, I argue that the game of chicken may only be resolved if the parties adopt an assertive and yet respectful attitude. It is key therefore that the negotiations are held away from media, in a discrete context.
