This paper focuses on analysing the poverty status and process of poverty reduction in north-eastern states of India. A series of poverty measures were used to analyse the poverty reduction during 1993-2000. In order to highlight the dispersal of poverty levels among the poor, the three sub-groups under BPL namely, extremely poor, very poor and moderately poor were categorised and identified. Further, it ascertains the relationship between poverty and quality of public services like drinking water, health care, public distribution system, public transport and primary education among the NE states of India.
