Abstract

Serving as the inaugural speech for the Upton Forum, as well as a brief summary of the new book Professor Douglass North has just finished, the article treats of not only the fundamentals of how society has evolved through time, but also the ways in which contemporary social science should develop to incorporate advanced attitudes and approaches. In the first part, the author sheds light on the underlying logics of two different social orders - limited access society and opens access society, and the three conditions in which the former transforms into the later. The second part examines the possible implications of this recognition, that in a continually-changing world, we also need an adaptive and ever-evolving perspective to look at it.
