Abstract:     
This is the first chapter of a book intended to explain how international agreements impact public health by mandating certain patent rights in individual countries. This chapter sets the stage for those without prior knowledge of drug development. In particular, the chapter provides an overview of drug discovery, development, and marketing, including relevant patent and regulatory laws that provide market protection to the manufacturers of such drugs.
