Abstract:
This paper explores aspects of governance in massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs), a subset of the larger games industry. It outlines five technologies of governance commonly used in MMOGs and contrasts and compares how these technologies are used in Eve Online, World of Warcraft and Tibia. Drawing upon contemporary theories of governance and post-panoptic surveillance theories, and building upon previous work on governance in MMOGS , this paper explores the human and non-human aspects of governance in online games and the potential implications of post-panoptic regimes of governance for online experiences more generally.
