Abstract:
This article explores the nature of mental illness stigma and its possible relationship to the excessive numbers of people with mental illnesses receiving convictions and sentences in the criminal justice system rather than compassion and treatment within the mental health system. The article proposed a range of mechanisms for correcting this imbalance by challenging mental illness stigma.
