Hamline Law Review, Vol. 29, p. 1, 2006
On the occasion of the death of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist in 2005, the author wrote a personal tribute. Over the 216 years of our nation’s history, 109 men and women have served as Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. This essay is about the man who was the longest-serving Chief Justice with the exception of Chief Justice John Marshall. The author, when he was Administrative Assistant (chief of staff) to Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, came to know Associate Justice Rehnquist. From that time, he recounts personal anecdotes that contribute to a measure of the man who was the Chief.
