Abstract

This paper is an entry on multiculturalism for the International Encyclopaedia of Ethics (Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell, 2012). It focuses on how the terms ‘multiculturalism’ and ‘cultural diversity’ have been used in normative political philosophy. It does not pretend to give a comprehensive description of the multicultural debate as it has developed over the last two decades. Instead, it analyses three positions as ideal-types within these debates: Charles Taylor’s Group-oriented Multiculturalism; the critique of group-oriented multiculturalism by Chandran Kukathas and Brian Barry; and Will Kymlicka’s Liberal Multiculturalism.
