The financial crisis triggered a comprehensive rethinking of the scope of financial regulation. The main contention of this paper is that the post-crisis policy response may be explained as a combination of factors that surface from the theories of regulation and that the causes of the financial crisis and the consequent European regulatory measures sustain the continued validity of the objectives of financial regulation.
