Abstract
With some exceptions the area of the rights of children in Islam did not attract the attention of serious authors in classical and medieval periods. However, many authors in the Middle East attempted to write about it in the second half of the 20th century, especially when Convention on the Rights of the Child was signed by the United Nations in 1989. Most of authors surveyed in this work have focused on rituals regarding children rather than their rights. Moreover, these authors consider child care to be a parental responsibility and ignore the role of the Muslim state and society. The work by UNICEF and Al-Azhar University discusses child rights under the Qur’an and the Sunnah but ignores the formulations of Muslim jurists regarding the rights of the child in Islam.
