Abstract

French Abstract: La dynamique contemporaine de la population mondiale présente un caractère totalement inédit au regard de l’histoire de l’humanité. Toute approche démographique planétaire, si nécessaire soit-elle, doit être impérativement complétée par l’examen de l’extraordinaire diversité des populations du monde. Ce livre poursuit un double objectif : la connaissance des étapes de la croissance humaine et de l’occupation des divers territoires de la planète ; la compréhension des variations dans l’espace et dans le temps des rythmes démographiques.

Ce livre montre la variété des évolutions et des différences spatiales, pour le mouvement naturel comme pour le mouvement migratoire. Car le XXIe siècle présente des changements fondamentaux par rapport aux évolutions démographiques du précédent. La croissance antérieure due à la transition démographique laisse la place à un ralentissement, parfois très rapide, même dans certains pays d’Afrique. Un continent, l’Europe, enregistre un accroissement négatif jamais constaté depuis sept siècles. La répartition spatiale des populations devient de plus en plus inégale. L’urbanisation profite principalement aux grandes métropoles. Les migrations se diversifient. Le vieillissement s’annonce comme le phénomène majeur des temps à venir.

Ces différents processus varient considérablement dans leur calendrier et leur intensité selon les populations du monde. Aussi l’auteur présente-t-il une approche géographique fine, partant d’un constat planétaire pour examiner les continents, les sous-continents et les pays, dont on découvre les traits multiformes des identités démographiques.

Ce livre comprend de nombreuses figures et cartes, un glossaire et un index géographique d’environ 500 entrées.

English Abstract: Contemporary dynamics of the global population presents a completely new character in relation to the history of mankind. Any global demographic approach, if necessary it may be, must imperatively be complemented by a review of the extraordinary diversity of the populations of the world. This book is twofold: knowledge of the stages of human growth and occupation of various territories of the planet; understanding the variations in space and time of demographic rhythms. This book shows the variety of trends and spatial differences for natural movement as the migratory movement. For the twenty-first century presents fundamental changes compared to the previous demographic changes. The previous growth due to the demographic transition gives way to a downturn, sometimes very fast, even in some African countries. A continent, Europe, recorded a negative growth ever recorded for seven centuries. The spatial distribution of the population is becoming more unequal. The urbanization benefits mainly large cities. Migration diversify. Aging promises to be the major phenomenon of the times to come. These processes vary considerably in their timing and intensity depending on the populations of the world.
