Abstract

A significant number of archaeologically, historically or culturally important shipwrecks are warships. These date back many hundreds of years but also include those of more recent conflicts, particularly the two world wars. Many of these wrecks now pose a hazard to the marine environment and to shipping. Significant legal uncertainties surround sunken warships which undermine a consistent international approach to dealing with those that are both historically and culturally important, but which pose some form of hazard. This article concerns some of these uncertainties.
