Abstract

Delivery is the fifth canon of rhetoric and one which students are particularly keen to master. This working paper offers a selection of examples used in rhetoric classes at University College Roosevelt that incorporate ideas from theatre and yoga as well as spontaneous and planned activities created by both the instructor and the students themselves. Encouraging students to devise their own modern versions of rhetorical ‘progymnasmata’ (preliminary exercises) helps them practice public speaking, overcome their fears and improve self-efficacy. In addition, classes are more enjoyable for the instructor.

Keywords: delivery, public speaking, drama, progymnasmata
