Abstract

This paper aims at informing the English speaking world about an almost secretly evolving experiment to decentralize health care in Hungary. The origins of the new model go back to the internal health policy discussions during the second half of the 1990s. The new model, now covering 10% of the Hungarian population is fully operational and seems to bring the expected fruits. The model has a bottom-up approach through combining the proven advantages of the British fund holding and the US managed care models, respectively.
