A Gender Comparison of Economists' Publication Records
E. Bruce Hutchinson University of Tennessee, Chattanooga Marc A. Loizeaux University of Tennessee at Chattanooga - Department of Mathematics Leila J. Pratt University of Tennessee, Chattanooga Stephanie Smullen University of Tennessee, Chattanooga - Department of Computer Science February 2007 Abstract: This research examines the journal publication record of male and female economists who were awarded the Ph. D. in economics by U.S. and Canadian universities in 1985. Tables track the publication history of males and females as well as the entire sample year-by-year for fifteen years. Chi-squared tests indicate that there is no statistical difference in the publication histories of the males and females even though males comprised approximately 84 percent of the population. T-tests however do show statistical differences during the fifteen-year period between those economists who published only one article and those who published additional articles and between those who published two articles and those who published three or more.
