Abstract

For a long time the government of the People's Republic of China rejected the idea of universal human rights standards. In recent years, the Chinese government has been more willing to acknowledge, incrementally, the universal elements in the discourse and institutuions of human rights. This paper analyzes the official position of the PRC government on human rights protection, and discusses the possibility of applying universal human rights standards in China.
