Abstract:
Knowledge management tools are becoming a significant component in the development of learning management systems. This paper examines recent research in the application of KM systems and tools to the academic environment. Organizational and technical factors that contribute to or inhibit the increased use of these tools are discussed. The applications that make up learning management systems are categorized and discussed using the n-tier distributed application architecture as a model for the structuring of the systems. The discussion of the systems in the literature suggests that the n-tier architecture is a good method for analyzing the systems. Suggestions for further research are made.
