Soliman, ed., Bonn, Germany, June 2006 Abstract: Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) increasingly consider information as an important resource. The challenge consists in using all the integration techniques of the day - whether they are information, data, application systems or even business-process integration - to build an Information Technology platform that can meet the demands of real-time businesses. The research that this paper draws on aims to identify the challenges that Romanian SMEs will have to face in the context of EU integration and in the contemporary global business environment. Our objectives consist in identifying the advantages implied by the implementation of the new information technologies, the extent to which SMEs management is aware of these advantages, and in identifying the main technological solution that will offer support to the development of these businesses as Enterprise Resource Planning products. We consider that the description of the European SMEs and national framework is particularly relevant in tracing down the arguments for the necessity of information integration.
