Notre Dame Legal Studies Paper No. 07-28

Abstract:
This article, The Goods of Marriage, is to appear in the DICTIONARY OF CANON LAW (Liturgical Press 2007, J. Conn & J. Provost, eds.). The dictionary article of approximately 2,800 words offers a general description and introductory overview of the goods of marriage in canon law. After providing a general description, the short article describes Saint Augustine's traditional three goods of fidelity, children, and sacrament. The article then discusses twentieth century developments in the Church's teaching and canon law from the perspectives of pre-Vatican II personalism, Vatican II's document Gaudium et Spes, and Canon 1055 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law.
