Ireland's Potential Liability for Extraordinary Renditions through Shannon Airport

Irish Law Times, Vol. 25, No. 7, pp. 106-110, 2007

Abstract:
This article outlines the international legal prohibition on extraordinary rendition and considers whether, if Shannon Airport is being used for the purposes of extraordinary rendition, Ireland might incur liability under international human rights law under the principles governing diplomatic assurances. It concludes that, although it might be said that the Irish government is not doing enough to prevent extraordinary rendition through Shannon Airport, it appears that Ireland is fulfilling its positive obligations under international law.
