Abstract

Between 1539 and 1554, the internal conflict over rewards between the leaders of the Spanish colony in Chile and the colonists below them fueled the effort to conquer the indigenous Mapuche people, despite the lack of gold or silver in Chile and the conquistadors' repeated defeats in battle by the Mapuche.
