Implementation of Blockchain Technology in Electronic Election in Sierra Leone

Abstract

The paper is devoted to the problem of using of Agora’s blockchain technology in the electronic election in Sierra Leone. Blockchain technology was organized by the Swiss start-up Agora. Specialists of the company have been working with private brokers for 2 years. With the help of this system validators of blocks and participants could be assign. We analysis the experience of conduction of the first election of President in history which is based on blockchain technology.

Blockchain technology was used to calculate the results of voting in Sierra Leone on the 7th March 2018. About 70% of the citizens of the African state Sierra Leone took part in Presidents’ elections. The records of each vote were saved in the system. After the end of the election, it will be available for download and study for everyone. Details and final results of the election are not disclosed yet. The final round of elections should be held on March 27, 2018, year. We made the conclusion that organization of election process with the help blockchain technology provides openness and full verifiability, as well as allow to reduce the costs of the organization of elections by refusing paper ballots.
