La Narración No Fiable (Unreliable Narration)

Abstract

Spanish Abstract: Este artículo revisa algunos errores en los conceptos narratológicos recientes referidos a la noción de la narración fiable y no fiable, y a los narradores fiables y no fiables: defendemos aquí en su lugar la concepción original de Wayne Booth. ¿Qué es un narrador fiable? ¿Se trata de una voz narrativa cuya veracidad o coherencia ideológica merezca que confiemos en ella? No necesariamente. Llamamos a un narrador 'fiable' cuando la voz narrativa está respaldada y autorizada por los presupuestos ideológicos de la obra, o del autor implícito. Esto no significa que esa voz haya de ser 'fiable' en el sentido ordinario del término, dado que los presupuestos ideológicos de la obra o del autor implícito pueden a su vez ser no fiables en ese sentido.

English Abstract: This paper revises some recent narratological misconceptions around the notion of reliable and unreliable narration and reliable and unreliable narrators, arguing in favour of a correct understanding of Wayne Booth's original conceptions of the same. What is an reliable narrator? Is it a narrative voice whose truthfulness or ideological coherence we can trust? Not necessarily. We call a narrator 'reliable' when the narrative voice is backed and authorized by the work's, or the implied authror's, ideological assumptions. This does not imply that it should be 'reliable' in the ordinary sense of the term... becasue the work's or the implied author's ideological assumptions may well be unreliable in their turn.
