Abstract

Recent advancements in automobile safety systems like antilock braking system (ABS) and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) have contributed vastly to vehicle safety to reducing the number of fatalities caused by an accident. Even after such advancements, data provided by WHO estimates that 137,572 deaths occurred in India per year due to road accidents. In this paper, a new system based on shear thickening fluids is discussed which can take automobile safety to a different height. This paper focuses on the use of shear thickening fluids mixed with magnetorheological or electrorheological fluids in absorbing the impact in automobiles in the event of an accident. It employs various sensors coupled with machine learning or artificial intelligence to detect accidents before they happen. Once the accident is detected, it primes the fluid at the projected area of impact using pumps. This method of impact absorption takes the impact load away from the vehicle body and thus minimizes the injuries and financial losses associated with road mishaps. The proposed system is easy to develop and install as an add-on to any vehicle.
