Abstract

English Abstract: This paper points out some elements of Oliver Goldsmith's thoughts on the order of Nature, as evidenced in his oriental tale 'Asem'. This tale can be read as a theodicy, as the story of a reconciliation to reality, as well as a reflection on the 'scala naturae' in the eighteenth-century tradition of a 'full nature' exhibiting the maximum variety of being in the best of possible worlds. Here I point out a connection between these issues and a proto-Darwinist conception of the economy of natural ecosystems and of complexity.
