Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a Psychomotor Skills Assessment Guide for repairs of television receivers in Electronics Work for Technical Colleges. Five research questions and three null hypotheses were raised to guide the study undertaken using instrumentation research design. The population of the study comprised 156 respondents (29 teachers and 127 students) offering Electronics Work as a course in the four technical colleges in Akwa Ibom State. One urban and one rural technical college were purposively selected for the study. Intact classes from these two technical colleges were used for the study. Eighteen teachers and 62 Senior Technical Three (ST3) students from the two selected technical colleges constituted the sample for the study. A 22 item Television Repairs Assessment Guide Questionnaire (TRAGQ) and a 20 item Television Repairs Assessment Guide (TRAG) were used to generate data for the study. The TRAGQ was trial tested and found to possess a reliability of 0.89 analysed using Cronbach Alpha. Data obtained through the instruments were subjected to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) on Mean, Factor Analysis, Cronbach Alpha, Fleiss Kappa, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation for answering of the research questions, while Independent t-test was used for testing of the hypotheses at .05 level of significance. Data analysis revealed that the Television Repairs Assessment Guide (TRAG) developed is valid, and also possesses a reliability coefficient of 0.86, an inter-rater reliability kappa of 0.53, and a correlation coefficient over time of 0.84. It was therefore recommended that Electronics Work teachers at technical colleges should downplay the use of product assessment only, but rather combine both product assessment method and the process-based TRAG.
