Abstract

We describe the work of an Action Group on Governance and Ethics in assessing the use of a new Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure in the University of Edinburgh. We review three
use cases of IoT at the University in the context of a framework for ethical and responsible
IoT that could be generalised to the University’s wider programme of data-driven innovation
and to universities and research centres. We also explore a broader set of issues in ethical
practice that reach beyond the boundaries of IoT in research and education.

Keywords: internet of things, ethics, responsible innovation, accountability
