Abstract

Aim: The greatest barrier to offering resuscitation training (CPR) in Brazil is the high cost of manikins. The aim of this study was to assess the non-inferiority between manikins, the step-by-step guide of CPR and quality of  chest compression training (CC) by students trained in two groups of different manikin models, one PET-bottle manikin (G) and the other one the Mini Anne® commercial manikin (L).

Methods: 1324 students, > 12 years old, attending public schools in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, were randomized. QCPR®.

Results: Effectiveness of 25.38% was observed for the G group compared to 24.13% for the L group, showing that the G manikin is not inferior to the L manikin (p = 0.0043; 95% CI: -2.66% -5.15%). No difference was observed between G and L groups regarding the step-by-step of CPR, quality of CC measured by depth and number of compressions released. The performance of the G group was inferior to that of the L group in the assessment of correct hand placement (p = 0.014).

Conclusion: Results suggest that the plastic bottle model may be an efficient and low- cost alternative for CPR training.
