Abstract

Agriculture sector has contributed 12.96% to the total GDP of the State in the year 2012-13. System of National Account considers only the economic benefits derived from the agricultural production but value of land asset is clearly ignored as non-productive. This is one of the several uses to which land is put, and forms a significant part of the total wealth of the state. In Karnataka 49.1 % of the population depends on agriculture for its livelihood. As per the land utilization statistics for 2011-12, out of the total geographical area 190.50 lakh hectares of the State, the net cropped area is 99.41 lakh hectares accounting to 52%.
