Using Interprofessional Education to Prepare Healthcare Professionals for Practice
Abstract
Multidisciplinary education and team-based care continue to be standard in academia and practice because it has been shown to improve patient care and outcomes. Healthcare programs offer interprofessional educational experiences to best prepare clinicians for practice. Faculty from advanced practice nursing and athletic training collaborated to create an interprofessional educational experience using simulation and case studies. The collaborative learning experience helped to broaden role identification and scope of practice and enhance understanding of the healthcare delivery system. A survey was used to obtain quantitative and qualitative data from nurse practitioner and athletic training students to assess students’ interprofessional education self-perceptions.
