Abstract
This paper seeks to explain the doctrine of force majeure and highlights cases where it has been successfully and unsuccessfully been used as a defense for breach of contract . The center of this paper is on the landmark judgement issued by the Kenyan Court of Appeal which recognized COVID 19 as a force majeure event .
