Abstract

Updated: Jan 2026.
Delegation, an essential trait, involves entrusting tasks to others and relaxing post-delegation. However, many individuals struggle with this, resorting to micromanagement or incessant checking. Effective delegation, akin to trusting a driver behind the wheel, is marked by tranquillity.

The cornerstone of effective delegation lies in establishing a strong rapport and mutual understanding between the manager and the delegates or subordinates regarding the seriousness or criticality of the issues to be addressed by the subordinates. Less critical matters can be autonomously handled by the delegates without manager involvement, while slightly more critical issues may be resolved by the delegates with the manager kept informed. The most critical issues necessitate immediate notification to the manager, who may need to intervene to address them independently.

Efficient delegation thrives when this clarity and understanding is reached between the manager and the delegates, enabling the delegates to assess the criticality of the issues and take appropriate action. This ensures that the manager can focus on genuine management concerns without being bogged down by trivial matters.

Prem Kamble is thankful that he could develop and maintain this rapport with his team throughout his managerial career fostering peace and efficiency for both himself and his delegates. Clear classification of issues by criticality, as mentioned earlier, streamlined decision-making processes. This approach allowed the delegates to autonomously resolve majority of issues, while escalating only those of utmost importance. Another crucial factor that contributed to the harmonious delegation was the practice of defining objectives not just for the department, but for almost each project or task within the department. This practice empowered delegates to make informed decisions independently, in most cases if not all – a decision was appropriate if it contributed to the defined goal or objective.

The delegation strategy is effective not only in professional organizations, but also in social groups like families, particularly among married couples. Effective delegation principles and role clarity promote shared ownership and resilience. Having clarity in roles fosters a supportive environment where individuals refrain from playing the blame game and instead embrace joint accountability.

Ultimately, success and failure are collective endeavours, reflecting the ethos of teamwork and mutual support embraced in both personal and professional settings.
