Abstract
Since its inception in France, the debate about the Nutri-Score has been of interest not only in Europe but worldwide.
This study provides a structured review of the existing literature on the Nutri-Score, referring to a selection of 224 scientific articles, detailing in particular the characteristics of the realized studies and their central findings by establishing nine distinct topical categories within the bulk of the literature.
The review reveals that in empirical studies, the focus is predominantly on those countries that have already introduced the Nutri-Score and have a certain market size, i.e., France, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands. Nevertheless, studies have also been conducted in non-European countries such as Australia, Canada, and the UK. Research gaps exist with regard to Luxembourg, which has already introduced the Nutri-Score. While, studies have considered the effect of the Nutri-Score on purchasing decisions, currently no studies have considered the implicit price connected to different ratings. The research about the efficiency of the Nutri-Score is driven primarily by members of the research team that have been active in its conception.
