Abstract

The development of AI systems differs significantly from traditional software engineering methodologies. This paper introduces the AI Capability Continuum, a three-phase framework that conceptualizes the evolution of AI systems. We analyze the capability curve of AI compared to traditional software, highlighting key distinctions and challenges. Our framework divides AI development into the Foundation Zone, Acceleration Ramp, and Maturity Plateau, providing a structured approach to understanding AI progression. Furthermore, we discuss the impact of Large Language Models (LLMs) on AI development cycles and the strategic implications for organizations adopting AI technologies.
