Abstract

The "America First Trade Policy announced by US President Donald Trump has galvanized debates about the emerging populist trade economics and the broader consequences of aggressive unilateral trade measures. This paper examines the historical precedent of the 1971 Nixon Measures, which similarly sought to address trade imbalances and economic instability through tariffs, currency adjustments, and price controls. The analysis highlights the unintended consequences of Nixon's policies, including the breakdown of negotiations to establish a replacement for the Bretton Woods system of exchange rate governance, the rise of financial speculation, increased price volatility, and structural trade imbalances that persist to this day. The insights serve as salutary lessons as to the potential for uncontrolled and unexpected ramifications of unilateral policies, given retaliatory dynamics and the transformation of global economic relations.
