Abstract

In this article, the author, a legal writing professor, explores the dangers of acronym overuse in legal writing in a humorous yet informative manner. Drawing on courtroom examples, judicial rebukes, and style guide recommendations, the article illustrates how acronyms—while convenient for writers—often burden readers and obscure meaning. The article surveys federal and state court opinions and procedural rules that warn against unfamiliar or excessive acronyms, and it highlights the persuasive power of clarity over abbreviation. The author humorously admits to her own acronym-heavy writing past as a lawyer, then outlines a practical framework: avoid acronyms unless they are widely recognized and always write with the reader in mind.

Keywords: acronym, court rules on acronym use, clarity, legal writing
