Abstract

This important and thoroughly researched first biography of one of Australia’s finest judges, Sir Frederick Jordan, Chief Justice of NSW 1934–1949, places his legal career in the context of his personal and intellectual life and of contemporaneous social and political events. It explores his particular judicial method, his important role as a judge who kept an expansive wartime government within legal bounds, and the circumstances of his being the first Australian-raised State governor.
