Abstract
With the emergence of digital technology, the scope of innovation now extends from within the enterprise to the entire ecosystem. The theory of an innovation ecosystem is proposed to define this nonlinear system of interactive innovation between multiple entities. Prior innovation ecosystem research mainly focuses on the entities of the innovation ecosystem and the ecosystem governance from a core firm’s perspective, but few studies focus on the formation process of an innovation ecosystem and how the roles of an enterprise in its innovation ecosystem evolve during this process. Using the case of a high-tech firm in China, this study adopts resource orchestration as a theoretical lens and explores how a firm constructs its innovation ecosystem and the evolution of its position. Specifically, this study identifies the three stages of innovation ecosystem development and the detailed processes and resource orchestration actions that occur in each stage. This study contributes to the innovation ecosystem literature by building a dynamic process model and investigating how the roles of an enterprise in its innovation ecosystem evolve and how the attributes of the ecosystem change accordingly. It also contributes to the resource orchestration literature by investigating how to achieve resource orchestration. The practical implications of this study are also discussed.
