Abstract

There has been an increasing demand to design reconfigurable antennas during the last few decades. Based on its ability to radiate frequency, radiation pattern and polarization, a reconfigurable antenna is able to perform multiple functions. This paper briefly discusses the challenges faced in the design of these antennas. In the first part of the paper, various types of reconfigurable antennas are described that are characterized on the basis of reconfiguration mechanisms used and the parameter to be reconfigured. The design aspects of reconfigurable antennas along with the components involved in designing are illustrated with advantages and shortcomings in the next part. Some of the applications of these antennas are also explained in the latter part.
