Abstract
This paper investigates the spatial aspects of domestic uses of thirty samples of Malay Traditional Houses in the southern region of Malaysia. It seeks to unlock the cryptic knowledge from the past; the underlying spatial principles of the Malay traditional houses more objectively (empirically analysed) than the common narrative understanding about it. The space syntax theory of 'social logic of space' is adopted in understanding the relationship between home owner and his own domestic space. The spatial configuration of the houses are explored in order to code the key convex spaces embedded in the unit through Space Syntax Visual Graph analysis. It measures the relationship between the global spatial configuration of each home and their convex spaces structuring the unit as a whole. The study advocates that every home strategizes its own individual dwelling system for a social interface in order to control the social interaction between men and women, visitors and the host, occurring in both low and high integrated areas in the house. Aiming at recommending an alternative in a modern house design for the low income population, the study seeks to disprove the hypothesis, which claims that the overall spatial configuration of Malay traditional houses dwelling units embraces high privacy for the dwellers.
