Abstract
Technology has been applied to every facets of human endeavor including special education. This is because it has been found useful as it offers improved methods and ways of doing things. The use of assistive technology has made learning more meaningful in the inclusive education system. Over the past decade, a number of studies have demonstrated the efficacy of assistive technology for individuals with learning difficulties. Ferguson & Asch (1999) stated that, it doesn't cure or eliminate learning difficulties, but it allows him or her to capitalize on his or her strengths and areas of difficulties to harness potentials. The study examined the roles of using assistive technology in the teaching students with learning disabilities, first taking a broad look at technology use in the instruction of students with learning disabilities. First, the researcher studied the use of technology for such instruction, then turning to definitions to refine the study. This research work was aimed at investigating the role of asistive technology in the education of students with special education need in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area of Cross River State. Survey research design was used, three research questions and three null hypothesis were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. A thirteen (13) items questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection with a sample of 30 respondents were used. Data collected was analyzed using Population t-test, Pearson moment correlation and One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) . The result of the analysis revealed that a good number of assistive technology is not available for students with learning disabilities in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area. Based on the findings of this research, it was discovered that the use of assistive technology does significantly influence the education of students with learning disabilities. As a result of these findings, it was recommended that the government, teachers and students with special education needs should take advantage of technology more specifically Assistive Technology.
