Abstract
Teacher communication mode and academic performance of students with hearing impairment was central to this study. While language and communication are perceived as the main problems encountered by students with hearing impairment. The main argument of this study is that, although proficiency in Sign Language among teachers does play a great role in the education of students with hearing impairment, it is not sufficient in offering quality education in this context. The study was conducted in Special Education Secondary School, Ibom Layout, Calabar. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for this study. D ata was collected self-designed questionnaire. The study found that, there is significant influence of teachers’ knowledge and communication skill on the academic performance of students with hearing impairment. Communication environment have significance support on the academic performance of students with hearing impairment. Communication mode has significant effect on the academic performance of students with hearing impairment. Instructional materials enhance the academic performance of students with hearing impairment. Consequent to the findings of this study, government should, as a matter of priority, organize regular American Sign Language (ASL) training for all practicing teachers.
